English compound of copy (Latin copia, abundance, via the sense of a reproduction) + right (Old English riht, that which is just); a maker's standing over how a made work may be copied, coined once printing made copying cheap enough to need a name for the standing at all.
Its own compound holds two unrelated histories side by side, an abundance-word joined to a justice-word, fused only because printing made copies cheap enough to need governing. The right is younger than the copying it governs.
